Surviving Office Christmas Parties: Do’s & Don’ts

Surviving Office Christmas Parties: Do’s & Don’ts

Do’s & Don’ts Of The Office Christmas Party

how to survive the office Christmas party

Gone are the days of photocopying your bum and stuffing pigs in blankets into the printer at the office Christmas party.

Now, your every move is influenced by the smart phones armed and ready to be pulled out of a coworkers pocket, eager to capture the embarrassing acts you’ll inevitably be part of.

We all know how these parties quickly turn from civilised yet slightly awkward, to a crazily drunken and out of control mess. Once a carefree environment, where the only reminder of your acts were rumours at the water cooler the following week, you’ll now be haunted for the rest of your life by that one photo on Instagram that, no matter how many times you beg and report it, will not get taken down… EVER.

Somehow, the dynamic of every Christmas party will bring even the most quietest of people out of their shell. You’ll have the finance department fighting to sit on Santa’s knee, someone from the account team will think the waste pipe is a dance pole, and the guys who spent weeks planning the party will take full advantage of the free bar as a reward. And guess what? There will be more than five pictures of this plastered across various social media platforms with countless hashtags making sure everyones mum and your clients will see.

For those with a pristine, overly filtered social presence, they’ll be super cautious at every moment. Constantly posing, pouting and preened, ready for that every camera flash. Until the shots start… then it’s time to plaster their gurning face all over Facebook.

Then comes the risk of those that are already logged in to the business social profiles. When your eyes are facing in different directions due to the jaeger bombs you’ve thrown back, it’s very difficult to remember to switch accounts. Cue the hungover call in the morning from your boss screaming at you to “TAKE DOWN THAT POST NOW!!!” oops.

Some businesses will even go as far as to ban mobile phones entirely at their Christmas parties to avoid embarrassment to their staff and the brand. This comes after an increase in workplace claims made from these parties, where the employer is unfortunately liable for their staff’s actions.

Save yourself from that sack of regrets waiting to happen by checking out our Office Party Do’s and Don’ts:

Do’s:

  • Do attend!
  • Do some dodgy dancing
  • Do watch what you drink
  • Compliment your co-workers outfits! Everyone likes to feel good about themselves
  • Log out of your company social accounts to avoid any mistakes
  • Maybe leave your phone behind, or sign out of social accounts so you can only take photos
  • Change your privacy settings on social just in case
  • Do mingle. Take the opportunity to talk to those you wouldn’t usually

Don’ts:

  • Don’t accidentally leave your phone on the bar, unlocked, ready for a hack
  • Don’t post inappropriate pictures or quotes from co-workers
  • Don’t make awkward conversation
  • Don’t post photos of people without their permission
  • Don’t post anything you know you wouldn’t like yourself
  • Don’t straddle Santa
  • Don’t flirt with the boss
  • Don’t ask for a payrise
  • Don’t pull a sickie the next day

Utilising local SEO

Utilising local SEO

Utilising Local SEO For Your Benefit

how to be found locally using search and directories

Marketing your business online involves a never-ending list of tasks, so why not start small and target your local area first?

Let’s start by explaining what we mean by ‘local’. We’re talking about businesses with a shop such as a bike shop or art gallery. But this doesn’t exclude businesses with a service area that go out to meet their customers, such as a plumber.

These are businesses that sell their products or services to people who live nearby and even people that are visiting from further afield. For example, a potential customer might live far away but is in your town on holiday looking to hire a bike from a shop during her stay.

Local SEO is a targeted and effective way of marketing your business online. It helps businesses to promote their products and services to local customers by generating traffic from location-based search. It allows you to be seen by customers on their terms.

One of the top reasons for local search is finding a specific business, the second most common reason is finding a product or service. Whilst some search for a specific business’ name, others don’t have one in mind when they start typing into that search bar. There is no better time to connect with a potential customer through local SEO than when they really need you.

Someone looking to buy in a specific location is usually ready to pull out their wallet – this sets you up to be their go-to shop if easily found in search results. Local directory marketing has a high conversion rate too, you’re likely to convert 1 in 2 leads into a customer. How amazing does that sound?

How do I do it?

It helps to have your website optimised to appear in search results for your specific products and services already.

Now, make sure your website contains your location details. If you have a shop you should include your address and maybe even an interactive map so customers can get directions to you. Also, include your telephone number and accurate working hours. If you have a service area business, make sure your website explains the areas you serve and how people can best get in touch with you.

Businesses need to be ready to be seen by searchers using any device, so make sure your website is optimised for mobile as well as desktop. Customers are often on the go when looking for local services, using there mobile to access your site. Having a clear, easy to read site is great for mobile users and the search engines that crawl your site looking for information.

List your business on local search listings such as Google My Business and Bing Places. These are nice and simple to set up and, depending on the browser you customer uses, will show up when a customer searches for your business.

The key to local directories and search is consistency. Make sure the same details and business name is published each time. You can update your listing at any time. There are so many directories you can sign up to, it’s worth keeping track of which you are part of with a spreadsheet or list so you don’t lose track when it comes to updating them.

Want to improve your websites chance of ranking in local search? Content is key. Write some articles about your services or products, include local aspects where you can. For example, if you run a camping business, write an article of the best camping spots in your area.

With more local information added to your website, search engines will start to recognise its relevance to local searchers. Your chances of appearing in the local results may start to increase.

Next thing to note is local advertising. On search engines you can bid to show your ad when people type in specific search terms. You can then limit these ads to people in certain locations or within specific distances from your business. The same is possible with targeting ads on social media platforms.

what-is-seo?So, to recap, the three things you need to do to take advantage of local SEO?
– Keep your local listings updated
– Add quality, relevant content to your website
– Have a mobile friendly site that is easily readable by both your audience and search engines

Kent B2B – November

Kent B2B – November

We’re back from another awesome day at the Kent B2B at the Historic Dockyard Chatham.

The networking event, hosted in Medway by Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce, was a great day out of the office for the teams at Giant Campus and Sleeping Giant Media.

The day started with an introduction from Jo James, Chief Executive Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce. Followed by our very own Luke Quilter, telling the tale of the #DiningRoomStartup and the journey that has led us to become who we are today.

Just before we enjoyed some lunch, we got to hear from Adrian Cole, from Frameless Glass Curtains, talking about growing a business during a recession. There were loads of amazing, fascinating speakers throughout the day.

We really enjoyed talking about our story, meeting new faces and seeing some of the old. We love seeing local businesses flourish. We were even treated to a cheeky glass of bubbly by Quinn Estates, fancy!

SGM at Kent B2B

There were some pretty awesome pitches, with loads of creativity floating about the rooms all day. We were surrounded by growing businesses and the history of old businesses all day at the Dockyard.

Massive thanks to the guys at the Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce for yet another amazing B2B. We can’t wait till the next one.

President Trump – The Lost Tweets

President Trump – The Lost Tweets

President Trump – The Lost Tweets

11 minutes that the world missed out on in 2017!

“Sorry, that page doesn’t exist”

On Thursday evening US President Donald Trump’s Twitter account vanished from our screens in a mysterious attack on the Presidents freedom of speech (or just his twitter account).

According to the BBC, ‘An employee deactivated the @realdonaldtrump account… it had been their last day on the job.’

Whilst his account was down, the world, including his 41.7 million followers, missed out on hearing what Mr Trump has had to say, but worry not! We have managed to get our hands on Trump’s lost tweets that never got to see the light of day.

Check them out below to see what the President had to say during the lost 11 minutes:

Trump’s lost Tweets

The latest incident has sparked debate about the security of the President’s account, given the potential consequences of posts falsely attributed to Mr Trump being published. This should also highlight to anyone online the importance of making sure your website and social media is secure and protected.

Here are our top 5 Tips for securing your social media

1.Create a difficult-to-guess password for each social account

We know this is easier said than done, try avoid using personal information such as birthdays, family or pet names, numbers in a pattern, and especially the word “password”. Mix up your lower case and capital letters, numbers and punctuation. If this is too complex to remember, store it in a password manager. Once you’ve got your password, we know you’d like to re-use it everywhere, but don’t!

2. Two-factor authentication

The big social media networks such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube or Google+ support two-step authentication. Besides your username and password, you have to enter a one-time password that gets sent as a short message to your mobile device paired with your account. Even if your username and password leak out.

3. Constantly review your account activity

Many social networks send notifications when your account is logged into from a new device when account information is changed or when multiple failed logins are detected. These notifications are sent via e-mail or text, depending on your preferences. Keep an eye out as any these alerts are the first telltale signs that somebody is attempting to get in.

4. Be mindful of what you click

Clicking links in phishing emails might be the first point of entry for many hackers and scammers. Protect yourself by not clicking on links you are not familiar with.

5. Review apps and browser add-ons

You may have granted third-party applications, such as online games, access to your feed so they can update your friends. Some applications can read your profile and post on your behalf. Remove access to applications that you longer use.

Don’t be like Donald, protect your social media!
